Course Description: The cosmetology program consists of 60 credit hours of theory and practical skill development for licensure. Full-time students should be able to complete the program within 225 days. Part-time students should be able to complete the program within 450 days.
Courses in this program involve safety and sanitation, proper work habits, preparation to pass the Colorado State Board practical and written exams and competency to function effectively in entry-level positions as a cosmetologist or a related occupation. Classes are taught in English. Tutoring sessions are available in English-Vietnamese and English-Spanish to help students gain a better understanding of the course material. The school uses a variety of instructional methods to teach classes including the use of audio and visual equipment, lectures, hands-on demonstrations and guest speakers.
Course Objective & Goals: Upon completion of the course requirements, graduates will be able to:
- Understand all sanitation, sterilization and safety precautions expected of cosmetologists.
- Confidently perform professional hair, skin and nail care services as: permanent waving, chemical relaxing, hairstyling, wet styling, pressing & iron curling, massage & skin care, makeup, shampoo & scalp treatments, hair tinting, bleaching, hair cutting, skin analysis, waxing, manicuring & pedicuring, application of artificial nails.
- Be familiarized with laws, rules and regulations required by the state.
- Attain business management skills, ethics, interpersonal skills and salesmanship.

Grading Procedure: Academic progress will be measured by theory work (test grades, homework, etc.) and practical work. Theory and practical work will be graded according to the following scale:
90% - 100% A Excellent
80% - 89% B Above average
70% - 79% C Satisfactory
69% or below D Unsatisfactory (student will be notified and placed on probation)
Students must maintain at least a 70% grade average in order to be considered making satisfactory progress.
Shampooing, Rinsing & Conditioning (2 credits)
Product knowledge, scalp massage techniques, shampooing, rinsing, and conditioning procedure, general
hair and scalp treatments.
Haircoloring (8 credits)
Color theory, hair facts, types of haircolor, client consultation, haircolor application procedures, lightening procedures, special effects haircoloring, special problems in haircolor, corrective coloring, salon menu and services, haircoloring safety precautions.
Haircutting (8 credits)
Basic principles of haircutting, client consultation, tools, body position, and safety, basic haircuts and other cutting techniques, clippers, edgers and trimmers.
Hairstyling (7 credits)
Client consultation, wet hairstyling basics, finger waving, pin curls, roller curls, comb-out techniques, hair wrapping, blow-dry styling, styling short to long hair, thermal hairstyling, thermal hair straightening, hair pressing, braiding and braiding extensions, wigs and hair enhancement.
Chemical Texture Services (4 credits)
Structure of hair, client consultation, permanent waving, permanent waving procedures, chemical hair relaxers, chemical hair relaxer procedures, soft curl permanents, chemical knowledge.
Manicuring & Pedicuring (7 credits)
Nail care tools, the manicuring table, client consultation, basic and other types of manicures, pedicures, safety rules in manicuring and pedicuring, electric filing, massage manipulations.
Application of Artificial Nails (5 credits)
Nail product chemistry, anatomy and physiology, the nail and its disorders, the skin and its disorders, nail tips, nail wraps, acrylic nails, gels, nail art, safety precautions, nail art.
Facial & Skin Care (7 credits)
Anatomy and physiology, chemistry for estheticians, basics of electricity, physiology and histology of the skin, skin disorders and diseases, skin analysis, product selection and ingredients, massage manipulation techniques, basic facials and treatments, machines.
Facial Makeup (1 credit)
Cosmetics for facial makeup, makeup color theory, client consultation, corrective makeup, artificial eyelashes, safety precautions, product selection and ingredients, application of cosmetics, sanitation and disinfection of cosmetic products.
Hair Removal (3 credits)
Morphology of the hair, hair growth cycle, characteristics of hair growth, methods of hair removal, room preparation, client consultation, contraindications for hair removal, waxing, eyebrow tweezing, eyebrow waxing, lip and chin waxing and body waxing.
Law, Rules & Regulations (1 credit)
Colorado state law, rules & regulations, licensing requirement and regulations.
