Hairstylist Program

Course Description:The hairstylist program consists of 1200 clock hours of theory and practical skill development for licensure.Full-time students should be able to complete the program within 50 weeks.Courses in this program involve safety and sanitation, proper work habits, preparation to pass the Colorado State Board practical and written exams and competency to function effectively in entry-level positions as a cosmetologist or a related occupation.Classes are taught in English.Tutoring sessions are available in English-Vietnamese and English-Spanish to help students gain a better understanding of the course material.

Method of Instruction:The school uses a variety of instructional methods to teach classes including the use of audio and visual equipment, lectures, hands-on demonstrations and guest speakers.

Course Objective & Goals:Upon completion of the course requirements, graduates will be able to:

Understand all sanitation, sterilization and safety precautions expected of hairstylists.

Confidently perform professional hair care services as: permanent waving, chemical relaxing, hairstyling, wet styling, pressing & iron curling, shampoo & scalp treatments, hair tinting, bleaching and hair cutting.

Be familiarized with laws, rules and regulations required by the state.

Attain business management skills, ethics, interpersonal skills and salesmanship.

Grading Procedure:Academic progress will be measured by theory work (test grades, homework, etc.) and practical work.Theory and practical work will be graded according to the following scale:

90% - 100% AExcellent

80% - 89%BAbove average

70% - 79%CSatisfactory

69% or belowDUnsatisfactory

Students must maintain at least a 70% grade average in order to be considered making satisfactory progress.

Course Subjects:

Shampooing, Rinsing & Conditioning (60 clock hours) - (15 hrs Theory & 45 hrs Lab)Week 1-2

Product knowledge, scalp massage techniques, shampooing, rinsing, and conditioning procedure, general hair and scalp treatments.

Haircoloring, Hair Tinting & Bleaching (240 clock hours) - (60 hrs Theory & 180 hrs Lab)Week 22-28

Color theory, hair facts, types of haircolor, client consultation, haircolor application procedures, lightening procedures, special effects haircoloring, special problems in haircolor, corrective coloring, salon menu and services, haircoloring safety precautions.

Haircutting (240 clock hours) - (60 hrs Theory & 180 hrs Lab)Week 3-9

Basic principles of haircutting, client consultation, tools, body position, and safety, basic haircuts and other cuttingtechniques, clippers, edgers and trimmers.

Hairstyling (210 clock hours) - (52.5 hrs Theory & 157.5 hrs Lab)Week 10-16

Client consultation, wet hairstyling basics, finger waving, pin curls, roller curls, comb-out techniques, hair wrapping, blow-dry styling, styling short to long hair, thermal hairstyling, thermal hair straightening, hair pressing, braiding and braiding extensions, wigs and hair enhancement.

Chemical Texture Services (120 clock hours) - (30 hrs Theory & 90 hrs Lab)Week 17-21

Structure of hair, client consultation, permanent waving, permanent waving procedures, chemical hair

relaxers, chemical hair relaxer procedures, soft curl permanents, chemical knowledge.

Law, Rules & Regulations (30 clock hours) - (7.5 hrs Theory & 22.5 hrs Lab)Week 1-40

Colorado state law, rules & regulations, licensing requirement and regulations.

Management, Ethics, Interpersonal

Skills & Salesmanship (30 clock hours) - (7.5 hrs Theory & 22.5 hrs Lab)Week 1-40

Disinfection, Sanitation & Safe

Work Practices (270 clock hours) - (67.5 hrs Theory & 202.5 hrs Lab) Week 1-40

Bacteria and other infectious agents, the treatment room, salon environment, principles and practice in

infection control, sanitation, disinfection, sterilization, and safe work practices, standards and regulations.
